When we speak of anti age treatments we mostly refer to those which improve the physical appearance of the skin.
But what causes the skin to age?
Basically two major causes are at work. Firstly, there is the bodies' natural aging process, which is continuous and which becomes increasingly evident from our 20's. Collagen production slows down and the elasticity of the skin is reduced, dead skin cells are not disposed of as quickly as before and production of new cells has a tendency to slow down.
This doesn't happen overnight but eventually the tell tale signs will begin to appear, most noticeably fine wrinkles, a fine and more translucent appearance to the skin, hair becomes grey and hair loss may be experienced
The second cause of skin aging is due to external factors and the most important of these is exposure to the Sun, especially when Sun protection products are not used.
Photoaging, which is the general term used to describe the Sun's bad effects on the skin, manifests itself as freckles, blotchy complexion, a tougher more leathery skin texture, liver spots (brown spots mostly on the hands and face) and in extreme cases skin cancer.
